How To Tell If I Have Bedbugs?

Clearly, it’s important to know what you’re dealing with when it comes to bed bugs. That’s why recognition is so important. Unfortunately, there are many bugs that can look like bed bugs, but here the general characteristics:

· They are typically the size of an apple seed or smaller
· They are usually reddish-brown with an oval shaped body
· Young bed bugs can be smaller with a translucent or whitish-yellow color

It’s important to look for both the actual bed bug as well as the eggs which are usually the size of a pinhead and pearly white.

You can often find bed bugs on the corners of your mattress. When smushed, they often leave blood trails since they feed on humans.

How To Find Bed Bugs

While it’s clear that you have a bed bug problem if you see one or more, it is often easier to look for the signs of their existence.

Whenever you change the sheets on your bed, if you see rust-colored or reddish stains on the sheets or mattresses where the bugs have been crushed, then you know you have a problem. People often see dark spots about the size of an ink pen mark which can be the excrement. Some people find the eggs and the pale yellow skins that the nymphs shed as they grow.

The bed bugs often are found in the seams or corners of the mattresses or chairs nearby. They also like to live in drawer joints and even electrical receptacles. They are quite resilient and can even hide on the head of a screw.

Your Reaction To Bed Bugs

Believe it or not, while the bugs feed on humans, some people remain completely unaware of being fed upon while others have a different reaction. Some people develop a red rash with even pronounced red spots where they have been bitten while others develop an itchy rash on the skin.

If you notice areas on your skin where you may have been bitten or an unexplained rash, it’s important to check your bed for bed bugs as part of the process to find out what’s wrong.

Things To Know About Bed Bugs

First, it’s important to know that while bed bugs are mostly nocturnal, they can move in the daytime as well. They tend to feed at night which can take anywhere from 3-12 minutes per feeding. They also are willing to travel up to 20 feet or more in order to feed. While they mainly feed on humans, they will also feed on pets as well.

Bed bugs reproduce at an alarming rate. While the egg to egg cycle can take 4-5 weeks, each female can lay 1-3 eggs per day and up to 500 eggs in her lifetime which could be a year or longer. Plus, they only need to feed once every 2 weeks to stay alive.

While bed bugs are a particular problem in the South, they are found throughout the country. The fact is that they are able to live anywhere their host can live.
